The Hartford Hospital Fellowship in Medical Simulation was established in 2011. It is a one or two year fellowship open to graduates of accredited Emergency Medicine Residencies.
The goal of the fellowship is to provide the participant with advanced training in medical simulation, curriculum development and implementation, simulation research, and teaching. This program will prepare the participant for a leadership position in medical education and for a medical simulation directorship position.
The faculty consists of recognized leaders in medical simulation as well as the academic faculty at the University of Connecticut Emergency Medicine Residency. The fellow will work directly under Dr. Thomas Nowicki, Director of Cognitive Simulation at the Hartford Hospital Center for Education, Simulation and Innovation.
Simulation Fellows at Hartford Hospital are required to have completed a residency in Emergency Medicine and be eligible to work as an Attending Physician in the Hartford Hospital Emergency Department.
This fellowship is a one or two year appointment. Time is spent at the Hartford Hospital Center for Education, Simulation and Innovation, a 10,000 + square foot state of the art Simulation Center opened in 2010. The Fellow will be an active participant across many disciplines developing curriculums, running simulations, and teaching in a variety of simulation center activities. This fellowship will allow the participant to actively develop their own teaching skills and explore their area of interest in resident and medical education. The fellow works closely with the residents of the University of Connecticut Emergency Medicine Residency which is based at Hartford Hospital, and is expected to educate and lecture the residents in their bi-weekly simulation sessions. Participation in at least one simulation based academic conference is expected during the fellowship. The opportunity also exists to pursue a Graduate Certificate or Master’s Degree in Education.
The fellow will act as an attending in Hartford Hospital’s Emergency Department. Hartford Hospital is the regions Level 1 trauma center with an active aeromedical program and the state's highest patient volume emergency department (approaching 100,000 a year.) This fellow will teach and participate in the education of residents in this academic emergency department.
The fellow will have the freedom to identify an area of interest in medical simulation and implement research projects during their fellowship. Faculty will work closely with the fellow to develop these research projects. It is expected the fellow will have a publishable manuscript by the completion of their appointment.
