March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month.

Help raise awareness by wearing blue on Friday March 3 and encouraging others to do the same!

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States after lung cancer. And with early detection, it’s also one of the most treatable forms of cancer.

Let us know if you are planning to wear BLUE on your unit, and we'll try to send a hospital photographer to take your photo for social media and internal publications. Please remember, all employees must sign a photo release before their photos may be used for publication. And don't forget to abide by your department's dress code policies. Submissions may be emailed to announcements@hhchealth.org.

Our Next Step in Enhancing Safety at Hartford Hospital

Hartford Hospital strives to maintain a welcoming and friendly environment for our patients, families and employees. First and foremost, we want to be a place of healing and recovery as well as a safe place for patients and guests alike to seek their medical care. From a safety perspective, we also want to understand who is in our buildings, which is why we are taking our next step in safety by managing the access to our entrances.

When we started our managed access program in March 2015, it was well received. It was simply the right thing to do for the safety of our patients, our staff and the guests of our campus.

With that said, the process at times has been cumbersome, which has led to occasional lines in our lobbies and a delay in getting guests connected with our patients. Having a manual check in process was a necessary first step to ensure that the right access was given with our new standards.

Yesterday marked the next step in enhancing the safety on our campus as we began to pilot the use of the “eVisitor Pass” for our customers entering from the main lobby and the Bone & Joint Institute. This system, using a scan from a driver’s license or manual photo, will help to both automate and expedite the interactions in our lobbies. If this pilot is deemed effective, we will roll this software out to our other locations including the Conklin building, Jefferson Building, Emergency Department, Donnelly Building and the ERC. We are also evaluating the use of this system at other entry points across Hartford Hospital.

Nominate a Healthcare Hero! 
The Connecticut Hospital Association’s (CHA) Healthcare Heroes Awards celebrate the invaluable contributions of healthcare workers, both to their field and to the community at large. CHA is seeking nominations from both direct patient care and nonclinical areas of CHA member facilities. Ten healthcare heroes, selected by a panel of judges, will be awarded a $100 cash prize.  Click here for an application. Winners will be honored at the 99th Annual CHA Annual Meeting on Wednesday, June 14. Tuberculosis (TB) Testing Schedules now available on the HHC Connect intranet

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) requires all hospital employees who perform direct patient care to receive an annual tuberculosis screening.  

All employees are required to come to Occupational Health Services (OHS) for their screening. OHS staff does not travel to departments to perform screenings.

Starting in January 2017, employees must come in for their annual or semi-annual screening by department/service area. This helps OHS staff screen employees more evenly throughout the year and avoid a bottleneck of employees who need to be screened at the end of the fiscal year. Employees have a 30-day grace period to complete testing. If TB screenings are not completed by the grace period, badge access will be terminated.

14th Annual BrainDance Awards
Braindance Awards for Student Projects on Mental Illness

The Institute of Living/Hartford Hospital is sponsoring an academic and art competition designed to decrease the stigma of mental illness. The BrainDance Awards encourage high school students to gain knowledge about psychiatric diseases and develop a more tolerant and realistic perspective toward people with severe psychiatric problems. The competition also aims to promote students’ interest in careers in mental health care. To receive a BrainDance Award, a student must submit an academic project or an art project on themes related to severe mental illness. Projects must be submitted using a flash drive or dropbox format only (WLMP files or project files are not accepted). Acceptable video formats are .WMV or MPEG 4. Awards up to $1,000 will be given to the best submissions.

The projects will be judged by expert clinicians and researchers in the field, based on:
• Relevance to the issue of stigma
• Creativity
• Accuracy of information
• Scientific rigor

Projects on any theme related to severe mental illness will be considered for an award.

The categories are: Scientific, Creative Expression (written or visual), and Mixed Media.
All applicants, their teachers, families and classmates will be invited to an awards day celebration hosted by the Institute of Living on April 27th, 2017. This day is designed to be an educational extension opportunity and will include a lecture by a national expert on mental illness, an awards presentation, a visit to our Myths, Minds & Medicine museum on the history of mental health care and a tour of our neuro-imaging research center. Winners can present a brief synopsis summarizing their projects. All applicants are encouraged to present a poster describing their project. The student lecture and poster presentations are designed so all participants can cite their BrainDance projects on future school or job applications.

Healthcare Provider BLS Class

BLS for healthcare providers course is designed to review, organize, and prioritize information and skills needed to manage a cardiac arrest and other life treating emergencies such as airway obstructions, heart attacks and stroke and basic life support level. For more information, call 860.972.4686.

Healthcare Provider CPR Class

EMS Education offers HCP CPR training as well as ACLS training through HealthStream using HeartCode BLS or ACLS. 

HeartCode allows students to complete the training online at their own pace, on their own schedule, followed by a brief skills check.

Giving Back/Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers Needed for No One Dies Alone Program

Please join those currently serving in the nationally recognized program called No One Dies Alone (NODA).  A “compassionate companion” volunteer provides reassuring presence to patients who would otherwise die alone. With the support of the nursing staff, companions are able to help provide patients with that most valuable of human gifts: a dignified death.

Who will be the 2017 Employee of the Year? 
Do you know an employee who goes above and beyond the call of duty? Nominate him/her for the 2017 Employee of the Year Award. The nominations form and submission guidelines are available on the Hartford Hospital intranet. The deadline for submission is March 17.

The Solutions Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provided free of charge by Hartford HealthCare and available to all Hartford HealthCare Employees and their families.

EAP provides help for any kind of concern such as:

· anxiety and depression
· marital issues and divorce
· family and parenting concerns
· alcohol and other drug dependencies
· budget and debt problems
· bereavement and other losses
· change in the workplace
· child and elder care
· compulsive gambling
· traumatic incidents
· family violence 

EAP offers up to 3 sessions of CONFIDENTIAL, free of charge sessions and help with referrals for treatment resources beyond the EAP. EAP has an office in the Education and Resource Center (ERC) as well as a statewide and national network of professional EAP counselors where employees and their family members can be seen. All EAP providers are Master’s or Doctoral level counselors.

Sons & Daughters/Hazel Vail Scholarship Applications

The Sons and Daughters/Hazel Vail Scholarship is a competitive, merit-based scholarships available to children of Hartford Hospital employees, which include Newington HH employees, IOL, Jefferson House, Cedar Mountain Commons and Rehabilitation Network (HHRN) employees, who meet eligibility requirements.

The scholarship honors Hazel Vail, a former teacher turned financial analyst at Cigna and a long-time volunteer and former member of the Hartford Hospital Auxiliary Board. Vail volunteered at the hospital for more than twenty-seven years and for twenty-five years of those years Vail served on auxiliary board in various capacities including assistant treasurer, t
reasurer, membership chair and on various special projects.

The annual scholarship awards $10,000 to a son or daughter of a Hartford Hospital employee.

Do you have a Gold Medal Manager?

Great managers inspire us to do our best. Let’s recognize them and tell their stories so that we all can learn and grow.

Every three months, we ask employees across Hartford HealthCare to nominate what we’re calling “Gold Medal Managers” – individuals who exemplify our H3W Leadership Behaviors every day.

Managers or supervisors who have one or more people reporting to them are eligible for recognition. An employee or group of employees may nominate their manager for recognition.

Throughout the year, changes and revisions to the Human Resources Policy and Procedure Manual are communicated and distributed. The following policy has been revised and updated.  A brief overview of the changes is provided.

Policy 111 - Workplace Violence Prevention Policy: This policy is being revised for formatting
and change in terminology. The name “Security” Department is changed to reflect
the new name of “Public Safety” and the term “staff member” has been changed to
Policy 111.1 - Workplace Violence Prevention Policy: This policy is being revised for
formatting and for change in terminology. The name “Security” Department is
changed to reflect the new name of “Public Safety” and the term “staff member” has
been changed to “employee”.
Policy 119 – Fitness for Duty Policy: This policy is being revised for formatting and change in
terminology. The term “employed staff member” has been changed to “employee”.

Policy 216 Transfer Policy – HH/HHC: This policy has been revised to add Hartford Hospital
procedural language on Page 5.

Referral Bonus Program

A bonus will be paid to any Hartford Region employee who refers an experienced candidate who is hired for the following openings:

The bonus will be $3,000 for full-time employees and $1,500 for part-time employees (working more than 24 hours per week), with half being paid at the candidate’s start date and the other half at the candidate’s six-month anniversary.

To qualify for the referral bonus, the referring employee’s name must be listed as a referral source on the application when submitted. The referring employee must not be in step 2 or higher of the performance improvement process.

Directors, assistant directors, employees in any role that has managerial or supervisory responsibilities and the staff of Human Resources will not be eligible for the program. Please allow up to 30 days for receipt of each portion of the referral bonus.

Please Note: Hartford HealthCare Rehab Network will pay a $750 referral bonus for per diem therapists/ATCs that average 24-hours per week and pay-per-visit therapists who average 12 visits per week.

Add Your Photo To Your Outlook Email Profile

In an effort to foster better communications and to put “a face to the name,” the ITS and Planning and Marketing Departments have created a process to allow staff to add their photograph to the Outlook Email profile via our HHC Intranet portal.

If you would like to have your photo become part of your Outlook email you simply visit your profile page on the Intranet, located at:

Then you upload your photograph using the instructions on the Intranet and the next day your photograph will be part of your Outlook Email profile.

This is the first in many data integration projects that are underway. ITS is currently working on a solution to synchronize other Intranet data to your Outlook email profile. Stay tuned there is lots more to come!

What's Your Best Practice 

As Hartford HealthCare mobilizes to improve our patient/customer experience, we know that great things are already happening in our offices, on our units and in our patient rooms every day.
The next step is to make sure that these “best practices” are shared across the system so that we can create one exceptional experience at every location that displays the HHC logo.
The HHC Patient Experience Council would like to hear about what you are already doing and what new ideas you have to improve patient experience.
Please help us to spread our best practices by submitting yours for review. Your submission should explain what you are doing and how it has had a measurable impact on improving patient experience. All submissions should explain how the practice relates to least one of the HHC 2016 Experience focus areas — Service, Communication and Environment.
The council, comprised of leaders across the system, will evaluate every entry. The best of the best will be celebrated at our next patient experience event and the implementation of the practice will be encouraged system-wide.

March is National Social Work Month

Each year the National Association of Social Workers chooses a theme to help communicate the value of social workers in our communities. This year’s theme is “Social Workers Stand Up!,” a campaign aimed at educating the public about the contributions of social workers and give social workers and their allies tools they can use to elevate the profession.


 Social Workers at Hartford Hospital stand up for their patients and their families by comforting those experiencing illness, homelessness, addiction, mental health crises and as well as other issues.

In November of 2016, in honor of Veteran’s Day, donations were collected from HHC employees at Hartford Hospital, Newington, Hospital of Central Connecticut, and Backus Hospital. Baskets were created and distributed to veterans throughout the state by the Newington VA and the West Haven VA. These donations support Veterans who are transitioning from being homeless to moving into a place of their own. More than 90 ‘Welcome Home Baskets’ were donated across Connecticut thanks to the generosity of HHC social workers and employees.

Research Studies

Healthy Volunteers Needed for Research Study 

The Anxiety Disorders Center at the Institute of Living/Hartford Hospital is recruiting participants with no current or lifetime history of psychiatric problems for a research study. 

Participants will be required to complete 2 MRIs within 16 weeks to evaluate how the brain responds to different tasks. Enrolled participants will be compensated up to $125 for their time. 

This study is open to adults ages 40 – 65 years old that meet the study criteria.

Health Volunteers Needed for Antibiotic Research Study
Must be a healthy male or female, age 18 or older and meet requirements of the study. Females must be non-pregnant and non-lactating. Parking and monetary compensation will be provided. If you are interested, contact Arlinda Carr at 860.972.6724. 

Volunteers are needed for a research study aiming to detect cancer earlier
HHC is conducting a research study to determine if a new blood test can be used to detect cancer earlier than standard screening tests.
Participants are needed to make a study-related blood donation for laboratory analysis.

You may qualify if:
· You are at least 20 years of age
· You are not pregnant
· You do not feel feverish or have an inflammatory disease
· You have never had cancer before (skin cancer other than melanoma is acceptable)
· You have recently been diagnosed with cancer but have not yet started treatment

Qualified participants will receive a $25 check card after their blood donation. To participate please contact 860.972.1588   

Volunteers Needed for a Research Study on Statins, Creatine and Exercise

Healthy men and postmenopausal women between the ages of 40 and 70 are needed for a research study examining how statins and the dietary supplement creatine affect a person's response to exercise. We are seeking individuals who do not regularly exercise, do not take medications or dietary supplements for high cholesterol, and do not use tobacco products. The 5 week protocol involves six visits to Hartford Hospital involving exercise tests on a treadmill and blood samples. Respirator FIT Testing Schedule

All testing is conducted in the ERD on the 4th floor, except on competency days, where it will be held on the 1st floor of the ERC in the Informal Lounge. Staff is encouraged to enroll through HealthStream.

March 2017 schedule:

Wednesday, March 8, 1 pm-5 pm
Wednesday, March 22, 10 am-2 pm
Wednesday, March 29  7 am – 11 am

FIT Testing is an annual requirement. Employees who are required to do a yearly N95 Respirator Fit test will see their due date in HealthStream as their anniversary date of starting at the hospital. When you have completed all three steps, the assignment will automatically reset to the same month next year. Complete your HealthStream module prior to getting the Fit Test portion.

If there are any changes to your cardiac or pulmonary health, or if you are a new employee, you must be medically cleared by Occupational Health prior to being Fit Tested.

Also, Federal Law prohibits testing of anyone with facial hair that interferes with the mask seal. Please ensure you meet all of these requirements before getting Fit Tested.
