Catheter ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that uses radiofrequency energy (heat) or cryo-therapy (cold) to destroy small areas of heart muscle that give rise to the electrical signals that cause rapid or irregular heart rhythms.


The Program 

The procedure is performed with special electrical catheters that are advanced to the heart via small punctures in the leg veins. The heart’s electrical system is mapped out with these catheters, and the problem areas can be identified and destroyed without harming the rest of the heart.

Catheter ablation is a therapeutic option for a wide variety of rhythm problems, including:

  • Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT)
  • Atrial Flutter (A-Flutter)
  • Atrial Fibrillation (A-Fib)
  • Ventricular tachycardia (VT)

In many instances, catheter ablation offers a very high likelihood of curing, or at least controlling, a patient’s rhythm problem, and in some cases ablation is considered the primary therapy (i.e. preferred to drug therapy).

Most catheter ablations are performed on an outpatient basis.

Treatment Options

At Hartford Hospital we have extensive experience with catheter ablation of heart rhythm disorders ranging from relatively straightforward SVT ablations to highly complex VT ablations in patients with advanced heart failure.

On average, Hartford Hospital Electrophysiologists (EPs) perform >200 ablations per year with an outstanding record of safety and efficacy.

Beyond Advanced Technology
The Electrophysiology labs at Hartford Hospital are equipped with the most advanced technology, including 3D Electroanatomic mapping systems and intracardiac echo, that allow us to navigate within the heart with minimal X-ray exposure.

Hartford Hospital EPs recently became the first in the state to utilize a newly FDA-approved contact force sensing ablation catheter that enhances the physician’s ability to achieve the stable tissue contact that is required for safe and effective ablation lesion formation.

Atrial Fibrillation

The Atrial Fibrillation (A-Fib) Center at Hartford Hospital is the first in the region to offer comprehensive evaluation and management services for patients suffering from A-Fib.

Cardioversion

A cardioversion is a procedure which is used to convert an abnormal heart rhythm (usually atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter) back to a normal heart rhythm (normal sinus rhythm).

A Holter monitor is a device which is capable of recording your heart rhythm onto a tape or memory card over a period of 24 hours.

Pacemakers

A pacemaker is a small electronic device which is implanted in people for a slow heart rhythm (bradycardia).

Tilt Table Testing

A tilt table test is a procedure used to help determine the cause of someone with syncope (passing out episodes).

Electrophysiology Study (EPS)

An electrophysiology study (EPS or EP study) is a test used to better understand the electrical system of the heart.
