In this procedure, a special scope is used to treat certain types of gastrointestinal cancer and Barrett’s esophagus.
In the past, only small, benign lesions in one layer of the GI tract could be removed with a scope. Patients with larger, cancerous tumors or tumors in certain layers needed to have open surgery. A surgeon would need make an incision, remove part of the organ and reconnect the remaining pieces. This led to a lengthy hospital stay, a long recovery and a substantial risk of complications.
Using an endoscope and tiny instruments, we can use advanced techniques like EMR and ESD to remove tumors from any layer of the GI tract. Risks are lower and most patients go home the next day without pain.
We are one of very few centers in the country with physicians on staff who are experts in both procedures, delivering exceptional results for many patients every year.
