Chest Wall Injury Center

The Chest Wall Injury Center at Hartford Hospital provides comprehensive care for patients who have sustained traumatic injuries to the thoracic cavity with the goal of enhancing quality of life after their injury.

Our multidisciplinary approach brings together surgical specialties such as trauma, thoracic, plastic, and orthopedic surgery teams that work in conjunction with anesthesia, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and chronic pain specialists. The Chest Wall Injury Center is also partnered with the Surgical Critical Care Division for the care of severely injured and medically complex patients. This allows for a holistic approach to maximize patient recovery.

The Chest Wall Injury Center at Hartford Hospital is proud to be a collaborative center with the Chest Wall Injury Society (CWIS), therefore, using high quality research to advance patient care outcomes.

What conditions do we treat?
Our trauma center at Hartford Hospital is a verified ACS Level 1 Trauma center capable of treating the most severely injured and medically complex patients. The Chest Wall Injury Center, as part of the Trauma Service, focuses on specific chest trauma including:

  • Rib fractures with/without flail chest
  • Sternal fractures
  • Hemo/pneumothoraces
  • Lung injuries
  • Lung herniation
  • Diaphragmatic injuries

What procedures do we offer?
The Chest Wall Injury Center at Hartford Hospital is able to provide specialized procedures catered to each patient’s individualized needs including:

  • Surgical stabilization of rib fractures including a minimally invasive approach
  • Open reduction and internal fixation of the sternum
  • Video assisted thoracic surgery
  • Cryoablation and advanced locoregional anesthesia

How do I Transfer a Patient to the Chest Wall Injury Center?
The Chest Wall Injury Center is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day by contacting the CLC at 860.972.1233. With our robust transfer capabilities, including our partnership with LIFESTAR, we are able to accept patients from local or regional hospitals both by ground and air.

Fellowships

The Division of Acute Care Surgery provides education in trauma surgery, emergency general surgery and surgical critical care for trainees including medical students, residents and fellows. In addition to training residents across several specialties, the Division provides both a 1-year surgical critical care fellowship and a 2-year acute care surgery fellowship.

Additionally, with the resources of the Center for Education, Simulation and Innovation, the Acute Care Surgery faculty provides training in Advanced Trauma Operative Management (ATOM), Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET), and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) which are offered to our trainees as well as to medical providers from around the country.
