Women’s Choice Award®
Hartford Hospital has been named one of America’s Best Stroke Centers by the Women’s Choice Award®, America’s trusted referral source for the best in healthcare. The award signifies that Hartford Hospital is in the top 8% of 4,812 U.S. hospitals offering stroke care services.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in five women in the United States will have a stroke in her lifetime and women comprise nearly 60% of all stroke deaths. A stroke center must be certified by the Joint Commission Stroke Certification Program as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center and/or Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center to be considered for the award. It is the only award recognizing excellence in stroke care based on robust criteria that consider patient satisfaction and clinical excellence.
Hartford Hospital is one of 405 award recipients representing the hospitals that have met the highest standards for stroke care in the U.S. by the Women’s Choice Award.

Comprehensive Stroke Center
The Joint Commission has designated The Stroke Center at Hartford Hospital as New England and Connecticut’s first Comprehensive Stroke Center. The recognition from The Joint Commission and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association means the hospital is part of an elite group of hospitals and health care systems that can offer the most specialized stroke care twenty four hours a day, seven days a week with specialized providers who are dedicated and focused on complex stroke care. Comprehensive Stroke Centers are recognized as industry leaders and are responsible for setting the national agenda in highly-specialized stroke care by meeting The Joint Commission’s meticulous standards for Disease-Specific Care Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification.
Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification is much like being designated a Level 1 trauma center in that it recognizes those hospitals that have state-of-the-art infrastructure, staff and training to receive and treat patients with the most complex strokes. Hartford Hospital underwent a rigorous onsite review in February 2013. Joint Commission experts reviewed Hartford Hospital’s compliance with the Comprehensive Stroke Center standards and requirements including advanced imaging capabilities, 24/7 availability of specialized treatments, and staff with the unique education and competencies to care for complex stroke patients.
