Adult Volunteer Program

18 years of age or older & out of high school

Completing an online application is the first step to becoming a volunteer. Applications are reviewed weekly by Volunteer Services and potential candidates are contacted for an interview.

During the interview process, applicants can share more detail about their interest in volunteering, obtain answers to questions they may have and learn about the Department of Volunteer Services, our requirements for volunteering and more details about current volunteer openings.

Applicant Requirements:

Applicants who are offered a volunteer role will be required to:

  • Complete Hospital Orientation
  • Complete HIPAA Training
  • Provide proof of childhood immunizations
  • Provide documentation of a current (within 12 months) PPD test
  • Provide documentation of Flu vaccine (during flu season only)
  • Complete an authorization for Criminal Background Check

College Students

Volunteer placement is based on skills, interests, and availability. College applicants are required to meet the 6 month (or two semester) minimum commitment.

If you will receive academic credit for volunteering you must be processed through the department of Medical Education. Please call 860.972.4187 for more information.

2019 Summer VolunTEEN Program
Jun. 24 - Aug. 16, 2019

14-18 years of age

The department of Volunteer Services at Hartford Hospital offers an exciting teen volunteer opportunity for students who may be considering a career in healthcare. We are looking for students who are driven to help others and would like to learn more about how a hospital setting.

VolunTEENS(Individuals 18 and older not currently attending high school or not newly graduated may apply with the Adult Volunteer application).

Applicant Requirements:

    • 14 – 18 years of age (or will turn 14 by June 24th)
    • Available a minimum of 6 of the 8 week program (June 24 through August 16th)
    • A minimum GPA of 3.0 (B average)
    • Available to volunteer weekly:
      • One 8-hour shift (8 a.m. – 4 p.m.) OR
      • Two 4-hour shifts: (8 a.m. - 12 noon or 12 noon - 4 p.m.)
      • Monday through Friday shifts for a total minimum of 48 hours for the program
  • Attend at least one mandatory educational session during the program. Educational opportunities may include:
    • Discussion about planning for a medical career
    • A tour of the Center for Education, Simulation and Innovation
    • Mental Health First Aid Training class
    • And much more….

Parent/Student Information Session:

Thank you for your interest in the 2019 VolunTEEN Information Session. At this time the registration is full and we are not taking any other requests for the mandatory Parent/Student Information Session.

For those who have registered, the Parent/Student Information Session will be held at Hartford Hospital on Monday, February 11th from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. (snow date Wednesday February 13th). Email susan.peck@hhchealth.org with any questions/concerns.

Volunteer Opportunities
There are over 200 positions available to volunteers throughout the hospital. The majority of these positions have their hours restricted to weekdays, 8am to 5pm, although some evening and weekend positions are available.

Volunteers Needed for Read to Grow program

Volunteers are trained to visit new parents in the maternity unit to discuss the importance of reading to children from birth to promote literacy skills. The program also provides a free book to each family.

Opportunities are open on Tuesday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Shifts must be completed from 4:00-7:00 p.m. and volunteers must commit for a minimum of six months.

The birth rate at Hartford Hospital is approximately 3,750 per year so there are a lot of families to visit!
