Volunteer Requirements

Volunteers are required, by regulations, to be a minimum of 14 years of age. Some departments have other age requirements - for example to be assigned on a patient care unit a volunteer must be at least 16 years old.

Health Screening
Measles: All persons under the age of 35 must provide documentation of measles vaccination.
Tuberculosis: All volunteer applicants must provide documentation of a two-step tuberculin skin test (PPD) performed within the last 12 months, or have one administered before commencing volunteer activity. If there is ever a positive reaction the volunteer must provide documentation of a negative chest x-ray as follow-up.

Volunteers must commit to the minimum required volunteer time:

  • Teens: must complete at least 48 hours and volunteer during at least 6 of the 8 weeks of the summer program
  • Adults: 3 hours per week for a minimum of 6 months

Grades and References
Teens must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and will be required to provide two written references

Volunteers will be provided with a uniform that they must wear while volunteering in accordance with the Dress Code policy.

There are over 200 positions available to volunteers throughout the hospital. The majority of these positions have their hours restricted to weekdays, 8am to 5pm, although some evening and weekend positions are available.

Volunteers Needed for Read to Grow program

Volunteers are trained to visit new parents in the maternity unit to discuss the importance of reading to children from birth to promote literacy skills. The program also provides a free book to each family.

Opportunities are open on Tuesday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Shifts must be completed from 4:00-7:00 p.m. and volunteers must commit for a minimum of six months.

The birth rate at Hartford Hospital is approximately 3,750 per year so there are a lot of families to visit!
