Sterile Processing Support

Thank you for your interest in applying to be a Sterile Processing Support volunteer at Hartford Hospital. 

Qualifications for this role are:

  1. Completion of a Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) Sterile Processing Certification Program.
    1. Program’s certificate of completion required
    2. Verification of the program’s legitimacy and operational status by Hartford Hospital Sterile Processing staff
  2. Seeking HSPA provisional experience and hands-on hours
    1. Proof of the HSPA Provisional Certification
      - or -
    2. Proof of pending CRCST exam date (i.e. registration confirmation)
    3. Passing grade of 90 or higher on the HHC SPS Provisional Volunteer exam
  1. Updated resume and two letters of recommendation
    1. To be reviewed by SPS leadership/management
  2. Approved placement by SPS leadership/management

  3. Proof of residence within the state of Connecticut

  4. The ability to lift 40lbs and be on their feet for long durations.

  5. Availability to volunteer 15 hours per week during the following days/times: Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays, 10am to 3:30pm with completion of at least 60 hours total

If accepted for this role applicants must complete the required Hartford Hospital volunteer on-boarding including orientation, HIPAA education, background check, and provision of medical documentation including MMR, Varicella and flu vaccinations, and a Tuberculosis test (either PPD skin test or quantiferon blood test) done within the last 12 months.

This volunteer opportunity will provide you the opportunity to experience: 

  1. Material Support:
    1. Cycle counting
    2. Rotating inventory
    3. Assist with inventory restock
    4. Utilize Tecsys system (inventory tracking system)
  2. Instrument Coordinator Support:
    1. Prepare instruments for repair
    2. Organize/ restock supplies
    3. General errands/ clerical tasks
    4. Restock carts/ shelves
    5. Instrument maintenance
  3. Resource Associate Support:
    1. Return inventory
    2. Empty and load cart washer
    3. Load and unload container racks
    4. Answer the phone
    5. Assist with case carts
    6. Delivery of items as instructed
    7. Utilize SPM (electronic tracking system)
  4. Sterile Processing Technician Support:
    1. Monitoring sterile inventory with a paid technician
    2. Sterility maintenance
    3. Quality assurance process participation
    4. Observation of documentation reviews
    5. Instruction for use (IFU) interpretation
    6. Policy standards and regulatory procedures
    7. Department maintenance and cleanliness tasks
    8. Observation of machine functionality test
    9. Preparation and cleaning of medical equipment
