The Transplant Program

The Hartford Hospital Transplant Program began in 1971 after surgeons completed the first kidney transplant in Connecticut. As the program continued to evolve as the leader of transplant services in the region, the first successful heart transplant in Connecticut was performed at Hartford Hospital in November of 1984.

One of only two transplant programs in Connecticut, our team of specialists provides expert pre-operative, peri-operative, and post-operative care in liver, heart, and kidney transplantation. The program utilizes state of the art technology, cutting edge surgical techniques, and personalized treatment plans tailored to each individual and family.

Our mission at the Hartford Hospital Transplant Program is to improve the health and healing of the people and communities we serve. Our approach to patient care utilizes the enormous talents and resources of our multidisciplinary team. Specialized medical and surgical providers work hand in hand with nurses, our psychosocial team, financial coordinators, pharmacists and community providers.

The program is certified by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). In addition, Hartford Hospital is a Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) accredited institution.

All organ programs (kidney, heart and liver) are Medicare certified for transplantation.
