Hartford Hospital is an 867-bed general and tertiary care teaching hospital and transplantation center affiliated with the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.
Hartford Hospital also provides pathology services for Connecticut Children’s, a separate 97 bed pediatric hospital on the Hartford Hospital campus.
Fully approved and ACGME-accredited residency training is available in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology; fellowship training is available in surgical pathology, cytopathology, and hematopathology.
The educational goal of Hartford Hospital Graduate Medical Education (GME) in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is to provide the house staff with a solid knowledge base in both anatomic and clinical pathology and to help the individual develop effective methods for approaching and solving problems. The general philosophy is that residents/fellows should play an active role in department activities (service, administrative, and research) and should be given as much responsibility as they are able to assume, always with appropriate support and with emphasis on patient safety and quality care. House staff completing the program should be competent to pursue either an academic or a private practice career in Pathology.
The faculty for the program is drawn from administration and from the medical staff of Hartford Hospital as well as from the faculty of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and the State Medical Examiner.
88 hospital autopsies were performed at Hartford Hospital in 2014. During this time, over 59,000 surgical tissues were processed including 4,000 intraoperative consultations. The cytology laboratory examined around 85,000 gynecologic specimens and over 6,000 non-gynecologic specimens, including fine needle aspirations from all body sites.
The mission of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is to provide the highest quality of laboratory services in keeping with the Hartford Hospital’s mission and organizational values. The clinical laboratories are well equipped and automated with research and development sections in Hematology Microbiology and Molecular Pathology. Over million tests were performed in the Hartford Hospital laboratories during 2006.

Residents have three weeks (15 days) of vacation time per year. Additional time is available for educational conferences, national meetings, professional examinations and fellowship/employment interviews.
In addition to the stated summary of benefits, Housestaff are encouraged to attend and present at local and national meetings; the Mead Fund provides monies to support educational travel and/or purchase of educational material for Housestaff.
House staffs in graduate medical education are provided with professional liability insurance coverage with limits of $5,000,000 per medical incident/$15,000,000 aggregate. Medical insurance coverage is available for single house officers as well as married with dependents, and malpractice insurance is provided by the hospital. Apartments and single rooms (hospital owned) are available at cost. Privately owned apartments are present in the immediate neighborhood. Career counseling and seminars in practice management, stress and risk are provided. Parking is free for residents.
In addition to the excellent departmental library, the hospital library contains more than 20,000 books and bound volumes, including more than 500 current journal titles. There is also access to the libraries of the Hartford Medical Society and the University of Connecticut Medical Center. A hospital maintained gymnasium is available for resident use.
