About the Program
The PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy Residency Program at Hartford Hospital provides an immersive and comprehensive experience designed to develop advanced clinical skills in oncology pharmacy practice. Based at Hartford Hospital and its affiliated offsite locations, this program offers an array of learning experiences across inpatient, outpatient, investigational and specialty pharmacy settings, ensuring a well-rounded education that aligns with the program's purpose.
Residents will engage in various patient care activities, where they will refine their expertise in oncology pharmacy through hands-on experience and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. The program’s structured learning experiences are tailored to meet the goals and objectives required for proficiency in patient care, including specialized areas of oncology treatment.
In addition to core rotations, the residency program includes several longitudinal experiences designed to further enhance the resident's professional development. These include a Medication Use Evaluation (MUE), a performance improvement project, and opportunities to present at grand rounds and participate in journal clubs. Residents will also gain valuable teaching experience by precepting APPE students and PGY1 residents.
Upon completion of the Hartford Hospital PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy Residency, graduates will have the comprehensive knowledge and skills necessary to excel as independent oncology pharmacists or specialists. The program is dedicated to fostering the professional growth of its residents, preparing them to take on leadership roles in oncology pharmacy and to contribute meaningfully to patient care and the advancement of the field.
Residency Program Purpose
PGY2 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives for advanced practice areas. Residents who successfully complete PGY2 residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, and board certification in the advanced practice area, if available.

PGY1 Residency: William W. Backus Hospital

Professional Interests: Cellular therapies, Breast Cancer, Academia
Post PGY2 Plans: My short-term goals include working as a clinical oncology pharmacist at a large academic institution. Within this role I would be required to stay up to date on the new treatments in the world of oncology. Eventually, I would like to pursue obtaining my BCOP certification to be able to practice at the top of my clinical specialty and join the next group of healthcare providers that will advance the study of oncology.
What attracted you to Hartford Hospital? I knew that I wanted to stay within the Hartford Healthcare system when continuing my professional training after PGY-1. From my first year at Backus hospital there was a certain feeling that the system was just a right fit for me. I was overjoyed to have that feeling come to fruition through my PGY-1. It is the relationships that I was able to form that has allowed me to continue to grow in my chosen specialty. The complexity of cases that come to Hartford and the compassionate care that we are able to provide is something that fulfills me every day. It is the dedication and support from my preceptors and peers that made the decision clear for me.
What do you do in your free time? In my free time I typically try to spend as much time outside that I am able. Whether that is going on a hike, skiing, kayaking, or simply going to the beach, I try to get out when I can. If the weather does not permit, then you can usually find me watching a movie or playing video games with my friends.
What do you love most about Connecticut? Originally being from Maine, I knew that I wanted to stay within the northeast for my career. Coming to Connecticut, I would have to say that my favorite thing about it is the nature that is around. There are plenty of beaches, parks and more scattered throughout the state that give me a sense of home. There is no shortage of beauty to be found here, just need to go exploring!
