Minimally Invasive Surgery

Advances in minimally invasive surgery over the past 20 years have dramatically altered the practice of surgery and the experience of the patient undergoing surgery.

Hartford Hospital has been on the cutting edge of these advances, leading the way with new and innovative laparoscopic and robotic procedures that have revolutionized surgery.

The result is that the best surgical and interventional minimally invasive techniques have always been available to patients at Hartford Hospital. In fact, more minimally invasive surgery has been performed at Hartford Hospital than any other hospital in the region, across various specialties including colorectal surgery, electrophysiology, gynecological oncology, heart disease, interventional neuroradiology, interventional radiology and vascular surgery, kidney surgery and transplantation, surgical weight loss, urogynecology, and urology.

Now, Hartford Hospital takes the lead again with the creation of the Minimally Invasive Surgical Institute (MISI), committed to advancing patient care through clinical expertise, education and research involving state-of-the-art surgical techniques and technology.

This multidisciplinary, integrated program creates an environment that allows Hartford Hospital and its affiliated institutions to attract the brightest and most talented students, residents and attending physicians who wish to train and practice in surroundings that assure the highest quality patient care and outcomes.

This innovative research and simulated training program also affords the next generation of physicians the opportunity to learn and master complex skills in a monitored and safe environment so that they are well prepared for direct patient care.

In addition, MISI’s state-of-the-art environment allows physicians to continue to advance and hone their skills throughout all their years of practice. Medicine is a complex and challenging discipline where physicians cannot afford to make errors in judgments or actions. Until recently, the concept of a computerized training environment with advanced simulation software and equipment was simply that – a concept.

Now, building on its medical and technical interest and expertise, along with the strong desire for success, Hartford Hospital takes the concept to the next level by creating a research, training and simulation complex that is unparalleled in the region.

Innovation is part of the culture at Hartford Hospital, and MISI is yet another example of the Hospital providing technology and more to support surgeons committed to staying on the cutting edge.

Proceeds from the 2009 Black & Red will help provide Hartford Hospital the support necessary to deliver such an innovative program to the community it serves, and establish Hartford Hospital as a national leader in this arena.

  • Colorectal Surgery

Our colorectal surgeons perform approximately 225 laparoscopic colectomies annually. While aggressive in developing minimally invasive techniques, the colorectal surgeons have been careful to ensure quality of care.

  • Gynecologic Oncology

Patients with endometrial, cervical, and early ovarian cancer are candidates for robotic hysterectomy with or without lymph node removal

  • Heart Disease

Hartford Hospital’s 24-hour Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory and its dedicated group of interventional cardiologists ensure that this life-saving, minimally invasive therapy is available to patients day or night.

  • Interventional Neuroradiology

  • Interventional Radiology and Vascular Surgery

More than 200,000 patients are diagnosed annually with an AAA, yet most have no symptoms. Screening for AAA in select populations at risk has been shown to reduce the morbidity and mortality due to this disease.

  • Kidney Surgery and Transplantation

Hartford Hospital is a recognized center of excellence in kidney transplantation. Half of all kidneys donated in the U.S. are from live volunteer donors. Removing the organ intact and able to be implanted is extremely exacting.

  • Urogynecology

Urinary incontinence, pelvic organ support problems and bladder disorders affect the health and quality of life of millions of women of all ages. Physicians in the Urogynecology Division at Hartford Hospital are specially trained to diagnose, educate and treat women for these disorders.

  • Urology

Hartford Hospital urologists are recognized leaders in this field, and have a level of experience few can match. Hartford Hospital surgeons perform hundreds of robotic surgical procedures every year.
